Daily Routines to Stay on Track

Let’s be real—life is chaos. Between work, errands, unexpected texts from your dad, and the siren call of Netflix, it’s easy to feel like you’re just reacting to the day instead of owning it. That’s where routines come in.
No, not those “I wake up at 4:30 am to meditate and drink green juice” routines. I’m talking about real-life routines—the kind that ground you, reduce decision fatigue, and help you feel like an actual functioning human. Let’s break down how daily routines (with the help of your planner, of course) can keep you on track without turning your life into a military drill.
Morning Routines That Set the Tone
Your morning doesn’t have to be long or elaborate to be meaningful. Just a few intentional habits can seriously shift your mindset for the day.
Here’s my go-to morning flow:
Open planner and review my top 3 priorities
Write a one-line gratitude thought (today’s was: “coffee exists”)
Sip my actual coffee in peace
Even five minutes with your planner each morning can help you start the day with direction. You don’t have to slay everything—just know where you’re headed.

Planning the Day Ahead (Without Stress)
I do a quick 5–10 minute planning session either right after breakfast or while I’m procrastinating on opening my inbox. I:
Review my to-do list
Use stickers to highlight non-negotiables
Block off time chunks (I like to call them power-hours!)
Don’t overthink it—just a quick glance and highlight is enough to feel like you’re steering the ship.
The Power of Midday Reset Moments
By noon, I’m usually 40% productive and 60% thinking about snacks. Enter the midday reset.
This is when I:
Step away from the screen
Brain dump into my planner (especially if my brain is buzzing)
Hydrate like a houseplant
Even 10 minutes of disconnecting and resetting helps keep the afternoon from spiraling into “doom scroll and regret” mode.
Evening Wind-Down Routines
Evenings are my time to cozy up, reflect, and gently prep for the next day. My routine looks like:
Reviewing what actually got done (surprise: it’s usually not everything)
Writing down a win from the day (even if it’s “I didn’t cry during laundry”)
Setting up my top 3 for tomorrow
I make it cozy with my favorite collagen (any sippy will do), candles, and a sticker or two if I’m feeling fancy. Routines aren’t about rigidity—they’re about comfort.
Using Routines to Support Your Goals
Your daily habits are the building blocks of your bigger goals. That’s where trackers come in.
Habit chains, consistency logs, even little sticker rewards—they all help you see momentum. And seeing progress = motivation.
When Routines Go Off the Rails (And How to Recover)
Look, some days will be messy. You’ll sleep through your alarm. You’ll forget your planner exists. You’ll eat cookies for breakfast (I do most days). And that’s okay.
Instead of spiraling, I do a quick reset:
Open my planner
Circle ONE thing to focus on
Let the rest go
Last week, I tried to follow a new AM routine and instead ended up scrolling Instagram in bed until 9am. I laughed, forgave myself, and rebooted the next day. That’s the vibe.
My Real-Life Routine Setup
Want a peek behind the curtain? Here’s how I actually structure my days:
Morning: Planner check-in + coffee (and cookies)
Midday: Planner brain dump and break
Evening: Review + next-day setup
I use a combo of vertical layouts and habit trackers to support it. You can see this all in action on my YouTube channel or in my Instagram Stories @planning_with_sally.

Build It Your Way
Routines aren’t about doing more—they’re about doing what matters with a little more ease. Start with one small habit, build from there, and give yourself grace on the messy days.
You’ve got this.
